An Uttara Bank official died on Tuesday after being hacked in Brahmanbaria's Kasba upazila, with police saying the prime suspect—who allegedly shared the same residence as the victim—remains at large.
The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, 45, principal officer of Uttara Bank's Gopinathpur Union branch. He was the son of Md Nizam Uddin of Pinglu village in Joypurhat's Panchbibi upazila.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md Obaidur Rahman said the suspect fled after the incident and efforts are underway to arrest him.
"We are investigating the incident, taking into account the previous dispute and the bank loan. Legal proceedings are underway," he said.
According to police and local sources, Ariful was attacked with a sharp weapon at Gopinathpur Bazar on Monday night and was initially taken to Kasba Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Comilla Medical College Hospital before being transferred to a private hospital in Dhaka, where he died on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the main suspect, Md Ali Hossain, 48, of Noamora village in Gopinathpur Union, had been living in the same house as Ariful.
Investigators said Ali had taken a loan of around Tk700,000 to Tk800,000 from Uttara Bank and that a dispute between the two over the matter may have led to the attack.
