Amid growing national outrage over a recent surge in child rape cases across Dhaka and Chittagong, police arrested a 60-year-old man Friday night for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl in the capital’s Kalabagan area.
The suspect, whose identity has been withheld by authorities pending formal identification, was apprehended from a house on Central Road and has since been produced before a Dhaka court.
According to Fazle Ashiq, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalabagan Police Station, the suspect lives in a building adjacent to the victim's family. On Friday evening, the man allegedly lured the child into his apartment with the promise of buying her chocolates, where the assault took place.
The victim’s family lodged a formal complaint immediately after learning of the incident, prompting police action.
"The case is currently under active investigation," OC Ashiq said. "Further legal proceedings will follow based on the forensic and investigative findings."
