Female ‘lifer’ given 10 more years for drug peddling

A female drug peddler was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a trial court in Barisal on Thursday.

Matiar Rahman, first additional district and session judge of Barisal, handed down the verdict to Ferdousi alias Baby Begum after examining eight witnesses and other evidences. The accused was also fined Tk5, 000 or given a three-month jail extension in the event of a default.

The drug peddler – already sentenced to a life term in another case of drug peddling by the trial court on September 12 – was the wife of Aminul Islam Harun from Diamond Lane of Natun Bazaar area in the city, said Zakir Hossain, the court’s bench clerk.

According to the prosecution and case details, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on May 28, 2009 raided Ferdousi’s house and arrested her, confiscating two litres of liquid phensidyl from a jar. 

Assistant Sub-Inspector Zafar Ahmed of Rab-8 lodged a case with Barisal Kotwali police station on the same night. Sub Inspector Haidar Ali, investigation officer of the case, filed the charge sheet against the accused on June 23 in the same year.
