Tangail man given life for firearms possession

Tangail court on Thursday sentenced a man to life for the illegal possession of firearms.

Before a crowded courtroom, District Special and Sessions Judge Md Ayub Ali handed down the verdict to Nurul Islam, 26, of Shakrail village under Sadar upazila in the district, after examining records and witnesses.

Nurul Islam was apprehended at Charabari Bazar in the upazila on July 13, 2009 by Sub-Inspector Kazi Shahan Haque of Sadar police station. During a body search, the lawman recovered a foreign revolver with five rounds of bullets.

The police official filed an arms case with the police station in this connection.

Another accused Ridhoy Ahmed was acquitted of the charge.

Special Public Prosecutor Nasimun Akter stood for the state while advocate Abdul Baki Miah and advocate Abdul Awal Mollah for the convict.
