Law enforcers on Sunday arrested 10 people in the city’s Maghbazar area allegedly for killing a youth as he broke the glass of a private car accidently.
The arrestees are Mohammad Hasan, Ashfaque Ahmed Khayer alias Chhoton, Arif Hossain, Jobair Hossain, Jakir Hossain, Mohammad Sujon, Sagar Hossain, Mohammad Amin, Foysal Ahmed and Kamruzzaman Ruman. They are officials and staff of film production company Jaz Multimedia.
Police placed them before a Dhaka court seeking 10 days’ remand. The court granted police one day to question the accused. They were arrested in a murder case filed with Ramna police station by the victim’s family.
Victim Munna was beaten to death on the basement of SK Tower in Maghbazar rail crossing area.
Kazi Shariful Islam, sub-inspector of Ramna police station and investigation officer of the case, told the Dhaka Tribune that during the incident, Munna was alone and if he had tried to snatch the car, the accused were supposed to call the police, rather than attacking him identifying as a snatcher.
He said the home district of Munna and the first attackers was same. “We will be clear about the motive of the killing after investigation,” he added.
Munna, an official of the accounts department of Unique Group in Panthapath, resided with his parents and wife in 212/5/A of Ulan Road in West Rampura. His father HM Khorshed Alam was a teacher of Kabi Nazrul College and formerly Jagannath College.
Munna was buried at the Azimpur graveyard last evening.
Quoting an eye witness, the case says because of his illness, Munna suddenly fell down on a private car (Dhaka Metro Ga 23-6779) breaking a window of the car in front of SK Tower. Noticing the incident, security guard of the tower Hasan along with the 10 other accused started beating Munna with sticks.
Later, they took Munna to the basement, tied his hands and legs with rope and beat up severely leaving him dead on the spot. On information, Thakur Lal Malo, sub-inspector of Ramna police station, recovered the body and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 11pm on Saturday.
Biplob Howlader, eyewitness of the incident, told the Dhaka Tribune that the accused had beaten up Munna identifying himself as a snatcher. But during the time, Munna shouted denying the allegation and requested for his release. But the attackers had not stopped until he died.
