Three activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal of Jahangirnagar University were detained on Tuesday after they set a bus on fire on the Dhaka-Aricha highway near campus premises.
Witnesses said JCD's university unit brought out a procession sometime around 10am demanding the immediate withdrawal of the lawsuit filed against their leader Abdul Kader Bhuiya.
They vandalised a Titas Paribahan bus and set it on fire, driver Mohammad Ayub Ali said.
There were no injuries or casualties reported.
Shortly afterward, three of the activists were held from the Dairy Gate area.
Savar police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mostafa Kamal said the three were identified as Moniruzzaman Sagor, Ahsan Habib and Faruk Hossain.
Jahangirnagar University Proctor Mohammad Muzibur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that the arson was the act of miscreants looking to incite anarchy on campus.
On the other hand, campus unit Chhatra Dal President Jakir Hossain denied taking responsibility of the incident while speaking to Dhaka Tribune. “We had no programmes.”
JCD joint secretary Sohel Rana was unavailable for comment.
