A cocktail explosion occurred inside the western gate of Shaheed Zia Park at Jatrabari intersection in Dhaka. At least five people were injured in the incident.
The explosion took place around 10:45pm on Friday.
According to a report by Prothom Alo, quoting police sources, the cocktail was thrown near the western gate of Shaheed Zia Park, adjacent to the Jatrabari intersection.
The device was wrapped in Scotch tape and placed inside a jorda (chewing tobacco) container. Police suspect that unidentified individuals hurled it from the Mawa-bound lane of the flyover above.
Jatrabari police said the cocktail exploded with a loud noise. Five people, including nursery workers inside the park — Jewel, 40, and Sohan, 24, — were injured. Police quickly arrived at the scene after being informed.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Jatrabari Police Station, Md Kamruzzaman Talukder, told Prothom Alo, “A cocktail exploded. One person suffered a hand injury and was taken to the nearby Safa-Marwa Hospital. The others sustained minor injuries. The incident is being investigated, and legal steps are underway.”
Md Shakil, a relative of the injured Jewel, said that the explosion occurred suddenly inside the tree fair area, injuring Jewel on his left hand and leg due to splinter injuries. Around midnight, he was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
However, Shakil could not confirm how exactly the explosion took place.
Inspector Md Faruq, in charge of the DMCH police camp, stated that Jewel is currently receiving treatment in the emergency department.
