A man was chopped to death following an altercation over love affairs at Purbakomornai Godarhat area, Gaibandha sadar upazila on Monday night.
The victim was identified as Abu Miah, 40, of the same village under Kholahati union.
Locals said a clash broke out between the men of Azad Miah and Hazrat Ali of the village on Sunday over love affairs issue of a girl and a boy in the area.
On Monday, the men of Hazrat Ali, equipped with sticks and lethal weapons, were taking preparations to lock in clash with their rival group.
At that time, the deceased engaged in argument with them in favour of Azad Miah that made them furious.
At one stage, Robizal, Santu and Jahurul, associates of Hazrat Ali, beat the victim mercilessly with sticks and chopped him brutally with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rushed Abu to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital immediately, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Gaibandha sadar police station Gopal Chandra Chakrabarti said Nazma Begum, wife of the victim, filed a case with the police station in this connection.
No one was arrested till filling of this report around 4pm.
