Kurigram: haven for drug abusers

Update : 14 Sep 2013, 05:59 PM

Kurigram town turns into a secret rendezvous for drug dealers and addicts as the darkness descends upon the otherwise quiet little town.

With the night approaching the town goes under the control of drug dealers and buyers.

People alleged that less monitoring by the law enforcing agencies was responsible for such situation.

Youths and adolescents account for a majority of the consumers of the illegal drugs.

Availability of the drugs at a large number of points in the town are a matter of concern to the guardians about their school and college-going children who easily give in to the temptation of drugs. Drug addicts visit Chamra Gola every evening where drugs are sold and bought almost in a free style.

The drug dealers continue their business allegedly in connivance with a section of police officials.

Drugs smuggled from neighbouring India enter the town through Tapu Velakopar Gorerpar.

An UNB report said about 10,000 bottles of Phensidyl syrup, several kilograms of hemp and other drugs enter the town every day.

A large quantity of the smuggled drugs is transported to different regions by road and river routes.

Each bottle of Phensidyl costs Tk200 to Tk250 in India and it is sold in Bangladesh at Tk400 to Tk450 at retail price.

Kurigram Municipality Mayor Nur Islam Nuru admitted to the spread of drugs trading and addiction in the district at dangerous level.

He said the future is dark unless the young generation is protected from the abuse of drugs.

If the administration becomes serious, Kurigram could be free from drugs, he added.

The officer-in-charge of Kurigram Sadar Police Station said police were taking all types of measures to eradicate illegal drugs business from the town.
