Customs officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday arrested a Pakistani national and two Bangladeshis with 1,400 cartons of smuggled cigarettes.
The Pakistani national was identified as Golam Sabbir while the Bangladeshi nationals were named as Md Wakil Ahmed and Nur Hosssain.
Mustafizur Rahman, a deputy director of the Customs Intelligence Department, said they seized the smuggled cigarettes- worth Tk2.5m- and arrested the three men soon after they arrived in Dhaka on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight in the afternoon.
“The flight landed in Dhaka from Pakistan via Sri Lanka”, said the customs deputy director, adding, “On information, we searched their luggage after they crossed the immigration checkpoint and found the cigarettes of different brands in their possession.”
Customs officials, said they later freed the arrestees but seized the cigarettes as they were not imported in accordance with proper procedures.
