At least 38 people were killed and scores injured in separate incidents, including road accidents, suicides and mass-beatings, in the month of August.
Of the people 11 were killed in road accidents, nine by unidentified persons, one in a bomb attack, four were beaten to death and one was killed in gun battle with police.
A gang of unidentified miscreants hacked Mohammad Babul to death and dumped his body near his residence at Dakshin Botgram under Sonaimuri upazila on August 2.
On August 4, police recovered the body of a schoolgirl near a pond in Satanipukurpar area under Noakhali sadar upazila.
It is alleged that the girl Suti Akter, 12, a student of class VI, was beaten to death.
An unidentified man aged about 55 was crushed under Noakhali Upakul Express train while he was crossing the rail track near Sonapur Ahmedia School at Noakhali sadar upazila on August 1.
On August 9, two motorcyclists Rajib and Shakil were critically injured as their motorbike hit a security checkpost, when they lost control of the vehicle.
They died on the way to Noakhali Medical College Hospital at night.
Rajib, son of Jahangir Alam of Hatia upazila, was a second year honours student at Noakhali Government College.
On August 11, Imam Hossain, a Jubo League leader, was hacked to death at Charparbati union under Companiganj upazila of the district.
On the same day, police recovered the body of an unidentified youth in Padipara area under Sonaimuri upazila.
On August 12, at least four people were injured when a microbus hit a tree after it went out of control, in front of a coal factory on the Maizdi-Chowmohini road under Begumganj upazila in the district.
They were taken to Noakhali Modern Hospital where, one among them was declared dead.
On August 13, a bus knocked down a man from behind while he was crossing the road in Bhuiyan Dighipar area under Senbagh upazila, leaving him dead on the spot.
On August 15, three motorcyclists were killed in Halima Dighir para area under Chatkhil upazila in a head-on collision with another motorcycle in front of Islamia Hospital at Chatkhil upazila in the district.
The deceased were identified as Mansur Zaman, 16, Nasir, 32, and Mujahid, 22.
On August 22, driver of a CNG-run auto rickshaw was killed as a goods-laden truck crushed him under its wheels at Chowmohoni.
The deceased was identified as Samsul Alam, son of Abdul Matin of Rameshawarpur village under Kabirhat upazila.
On August 30, four suspected pirates, including a ringleader, were beaten to death in separate incidents of attacks by a lynch-mob in Hatiya upazila.
The victims were identified as Ashraf, 35, Kefayet, 35, Osman, 35, and Sarwar, 33.
They all hailed from different char areas of the upazila. Police and witnesses said Ashraf, the leader of ‘Ashraf Bahini’ and a resident of Jahajmara, was fleeing the area, chased by the police early on Saturday.
The local people caught him at Hilton Road, gave him a good beating and left him for the dead.
Kefayet was beaten to death by a mob at Jonardona and the other two were beaten to death at Mohammadpur Bazar at the upazila.
