Couple lands in jail for torturing house-help

A couple from the capital’s Tejgaon area was arrested Tuesday for torturing their nine-year-old house-help.

The victim, Tuni, was rescued by the police and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later she was transferred to its One Stop Crisis Centre.

The girl borne injury marks on her body, showing evidences of being tortured with heated iron.

The couple Md Yusuf, 37, a private tutor and his wife, Nazma Begum, 28 was under the Tejgaon police station custody.

Daughter of Abdur Rob, from Doulatkhan upazila in Bhola, Tuni, had been working at the couple’s house for one year, as her father could not bear the expenses of his family of five. Sub-Inspector Abdur Rahim at Tejgaon police station, said after receiving information from neighbours, they detained the couple, who during primary interrogation admitted torturing the child.

He said: “The victim’s parents have been informed and forces have been sent to bring them to Dhaka. After their arrival, a case will be filed and the detained couple will be produced before the court.”

In another incident, Kafrul police arrested a house wife, named Parveen Begum Hira, from the city’s East Kazipara for torturing her 10-year-old house-help.

Police rescued the victim, Rabeya, and admitted her to the DMCH with both her eyes damaged. Victim’s father had filed a case with the station.
