Police have uncovered the murder mystery of businessman Jasim Uddin Masum, whose dismembered body was found wrapped in polythene in Rupganj, Narayanganj.

According to police, Masum was sedated with sleeping pills and killed following a romantic relation. His body was then cut into pieces and discarded in different locations.

Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar Majumder revealed details of the investigation at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

He said: "The seven dismembered parts of Jasim Uddin Masum (62) were recovered from Purbachal, Rupganj. Initially, the body was unidentified, but a general diary (GD) filed at Gulshan police station helped identify him. Masum, an industrialist and owner of Chand Dyeing in Fatulla, was married with children."

Following a detailed investigation, police arrested the prime suspect, Ruma Akter, 28, from her rented apartment in Shewrapara, Kafrul, Dhaka.

During the arrest, a machete, a hesco blade, and Masum’s safari suit and shoes were recovered based on Ruma’s information.

According to Majumder, Ruma confessed during questioning that she killed Masum over a dispute centring romantic relation.

Ruma, who had been in a relationship with Masum, became jealous after discovering he was involved with another woman. Acting on her anger, she allegedly lured him to her Shewrapara apartment on November 10, mixed sleeping pills in his milk, and once he was unconscious, killed him with a machete.

She then dismembered his body, packed it in bags, and disposed of the pieces using a ride-sharing service and later a CNG auto-rickshaw. Ruma is the daughter of Nozar Ali from Tarakanda, Gouripur, Mymensingh.

Two others are currently being questioned to assess their involvement in the crime, police said.

A murder case has been filed with Rupganj police station.

On November 12, Masum’s son, Obaidul Islam Shibu, filed a GD at Gulshan police station, reporting his father missing since November 10.

The seven body parts, found wrapped in black polythene bags, were discovered on November 13 along the northern side of the Kanchan-Kuril highway in the Brahmankhali area of Rupganj.
