Action against MP Rony suggested for 'false' case

Update : 30 Jul 2013, 10:55 AM

The investigation officer (IO) of a case, filed by ruling Awami League lawmaker Golam Moula Rony against two Independent TV journalists, told a Dhaka court on Tuesday that the accusations made in the case are "false and baseless."

Alleging that Rony filed the case against reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul to divert people's attention from the incident, the investigation officer, Abu Zafar, also a sub-inspector of Shahbagh police station, appealed to the court to take action against Rony for filing the 'false' case.

Zafar submitted the probe report of the case to the court on Tuesday morning.

MP Rony filed the case with Shahbagh police station on July 20 accusing the journalists of attacking him, threatening him with death and trying to extort money from him.

The investigation officer also appealed to discharge the journalists from the charges too.

After hearing the IO's plea, Metropolitan Magistrate Shariar Mahmud Adnan set August 21 for hearing the probe report, submitted by police.

According to the case statement filed by Rony, the lawmaker claimed that the accused threatened to abduct him, if he did not pay the demanded money.

On July 20, the Awami League lawmaker from Patuakhali allegedly assaulted the journalists in his Meherba Plaza office at the capital's Topkhana Road area while they were working on a weekly crime show titled "Talash."

On July 21, Yunus Ali, assistant manager of the channel, filed a case for "attempted murder, vandalism and assault" with Shahbagh police station against the lawmaker and 20-25 unnamed people.

On July 24, Rony was arrested from Basundhara Residential Area hours after a Dhaka court issued an arrest warrant against him.
