Robbers hurt 5 including police

A gang of highway robbers injured five people, including a police officer, while looting a microbus on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Rajbari on Monday night.

Police said the gang made a sudden attack on the microbus in front of Daulatdia Model High School, under the district's Goalondo upazila, at around 9:30pm.

The group looted valuables worth at least Tk50,000 and snatched five mobile phone from passengers.

Police said the gang stopped their car while they were on their way to Dhaka airport to pick up arriving relatives, and started the robbery by attacking the driver and passengers with lethal weapons.

On hearing the screaming passengers, a highway mobile team of Goalondo police station drove there to investigate.

Sensing the presence of police the robbers chucked a handmade bomb at them, injuring Sub Inspector Aminul Islam.

The other four that were injured were Selim Pramanik, 27, driver of the microbus, Arif Robbani, 22, Ali Nur, 23, and Aminul Islam, 30.

Selim was rushed to the Faridpur medical college Hospital as his situation was critical, while the others were admitted at Goalondo Upazila Health Complex.

Mohammad Abul Basher, officer-in-charge of Goalondo police station said, upon being informed, another team of police reached the spot immediately but the gang had already fled the scene.

He added that they detained five suspects from a brothel in connection to this incident, and a case was lodged with Goalondo police station.
