A gang of miscreants hacked two brothers to death in Fenchuganj Sarkarkhana Bazar under Fenchuganj upazila of Sylhet.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Shahin, 18 and Mohammad Shamim, 22, sons of Sanu Mia from Kochua Bohor village of the upazila.
Mohammad Shahin obtained GPA 4.0 in HSC examination this year's at Business Studies from Fenchuganj Degree College.
Sources said, around 12 miscreants overwhelmed the brothers at around 10am while they were hanging out with friends in the Fenchuganj Sarkarkhana Bazar area. The gang hacked Shahin and Shamim indiscriminately and fled immediately, leaving them critically injured.
Tomal, 22, a friend of the brothers, was also injured when he tried to rescue them. The local people recovered their bodies and sent them to Fenchuganj Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.
Shafiqul Alam, Doctor of Fenchuganj Upazila Health Complex said the victims died due to excessive bleeding. Tomal has been admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical Collage Hospital.
Eyewitnesses said a long-standing rivalry between the two groups could be the reason behind the attack.
Shahidur Rahman, Officer-in-charge of Fenchuganj police station said, "It was a pre-meditated attack centering on long term rivalry."
Police visited the spot and recorded a victim's statement to identify the murderers, he added.
