Tribunal asks defence to complete IO's cross-examination

Update : 01 Aug 2013, 04:21 AM

The tribunal dealing with war crimes trials on July 31 asked the defence lawyer in the case against former BNP state minister Abdul Alim to complete cross-examination of the investigation officer on Sunday.

The International Crimes Tribunal 2 also said otherwise, it would pass further orders.

The tribunal set the date just after defence lawyer M Tajul Islam submitted an application seeking adjournment of the cross-examination of the IO, ZM Altafur Rahman, till Sunday saying Alim's conducting lawyer Ahsanul Huq Hena was ill.

Altafur is the 35th and last prosecution witness in the case. His cross-examination was due July 31.

Allowing the plea, the tribunal, however, said the defence had been repeatedly seeking adjournment in the cross-examination of the IO and it could not be allowed repeatedly.

Earlier, the IO testified at the tribunal on July 24 and on July 25. Later, the tribunal fixed July 29 for his cross-examination but the defence sought adjournment, which led the tribunal to adjourn the cross-examination till July 30. That day, the defence cross-examined the IO only for around half an hour.
