Police arrested a woman and her husband in a case filed by her father, Abdul Hamid, in connection with stealing over Tk1.5 crore from his iron safe in a house in Mohammadpur area of the capital.

The arrestees are Mina Hamid and her husband Sakibul Hasan.

According to a media report, businessman Abdul Hamid resides in Mohammadpur with his wife and children. Two days before Eid-ul-Azha, he traveled to his village home in Bhola. He returned to Dhaka on June 20, after the Eid celebrations.

Eleven days after his return, he discovered that Tk1.66 crore was missing from his iron safe at home.

Abdul Hamid questioned everyone in the house about the missing money, but no one admitted to taking it. Subsequently, on July 4, he went to the Mohammadpur police station with his daughter Mina and filed a theft case against unknown individuals.

Following the filing of the case, police visited Abdul Hamid's house. Initially, the officers suspected that the theft might have been an inside job, as the iron safe showed no signs of forced entry. They interrogated everyone living in the house.

After four days of investigation, the police discovered that Mina, Abdul Hamid's only daughter, was involved in the theft. Mina and her husband were subsequently arrested.

During interrogation, Mina confessed that she had taken the money from her father's iron safe and handed it over to her husband. Mina had married Sakibul, her husband, without informing her family.

The police raided and arrested Sakibul, recovering Tk90 lakh of the stolen money.

Mohammadpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mahfuzul Haque Bhuiyan confirmed the incident. He mentioned that a report would be submitted to the court following the investigation.

Sub-Inspector Motiur Rahman, the investigation officer for the case, provided further details. He stated that Mina Hamid is currently studying for a Bar-at-Law degree. Last year, she married Sakibul, a postgraduate from Titumir College in Dhaka, without informing her family.

During initial interrogation, Mina explained that her family did not accept their marriage. Consequently, she took the money with the intention of starting a new life with Sakibul, without informing her family.
