Tk60m embezzled from five banks using fake documents

Update : 28 Aug 2013, 05:27 PM

A businessman, in connivance with high-ranking officials of five banks, was alleged to have embezzled approximately Tk60m through the use of fake documents.

Anti Corruption Committee (ACC) officials said Masudur Rahman Mazed, proprietor of Fahim Attire Limited, used forged land documents to manage bank loans of Tk60m.

The company took Tk23m from Sonali Bank’s Gulshan Branch, Tk16m from Janata Bank, Tk3.32m from NCC Bank, Tk15.1m from Mercantile Bank and Tk1.54m from Dhaka Bank, said the officials in return for anonymity.

Another ACC official said the businessman had not taken out a mortgage.

“As the bank officials granted him the loan without any mortgage, it is suspected that high-level officials of the banks are involved in the scam. We are looking into it,” the official said.

On August 1, the ACC filed a case with Gulshan Police Station against the former branch manager of Sonali Bank’s Gulshan branch M Akhtaruzzman (temporarily suspended), its Principal Officer Santosh Chandra Sen, Executive Officer Abul Hasem, Senior Officer AHM Khairuzzaman, Assistant Officer M Sahidul Islam, Principal Office Assistant General Manager Gopal Chandra Das, and the proprietor of Fahim Attire Limited Masudur Rahman Mazed on charges relating to the embezzlement of around Tk10m.

ACC Deputy Assistant Director M Wahiduzzaman filed the case.

According to the first information on the report, the accused, in cooperation with each other, misused their power and allocated loans to Fahim Attire Limited against forged land deeds.

They also submitted a false inspection report on the said company. From 2008 to 2011 the accused collected the money from Sonali Bank.

ACC sources also said the accused had swindled a total of Tk20.3m from Sonali Bank. They, however, later returned Tk10.3m.

The case was filed under section 409/109 of the Penal Code and section 5 (2) of the Corruption Prevention Act-1947.
