A Faridpur court yesterday awarded life imprisonment to former traffic inspector Sheikh Azam in a narcotics case. He was also fined Tk5,000.
Shihabul Islam, the judge of the Faridpur Additional District and Sessions Court, handed down the verdict on Monday, Public Prosecutor Sanowar Hossain said.
The convicted, Sheikh Azam, 40, is the son of Ali Ahmad Sheikh of Pachuria village of Lohagara in Narail.
On December 26, 2017, Sub-Inspector Kamruzzaman of Madhukhali police station received information on his mobile phone that a motorcycle accident took place on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway. Md Mujibar Molla, a sawmill worker, was injured in that accident.

The police recovered 82 bottles of Phensedyl from a box hidden inside the motorcycle, according to the case.
Sheikh Azam used to travel frequently from Chuadanga to Rajbari and used to transport and trade drugs, the PP added.
On May 7, 2018, Inspector Md Mizanur Rahman of Madhukhali police station submitted the charge sheet in the case.
The court acquitted another accused, Noor Alam—who was also riding the motorcycle—as he was not involved with this incident.
