A murder accused has reportedly beaten another murder accused to death in the prison cell of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barisal in the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Motahar, 60, of Kawnia village at Betagi, Barguna.

He was reportedly beaten to death by Torikul Islam, 25, of Kalagachia village at Galachipa, Patuakhali. He has been reported to be mentally unstable.

Another inmate, Ajit Mandal, accused in a theft case, sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in the surgery ward of SBMCH.

Barisal Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) ATM Arisul Haque confirmed the incident, mentioning that the mentally unstable accused attacked the other two inmates with a steel stand of saline. Legal action will be taken in this regard.

Barisal Central Jail Senior Jail Superintendent Ratna Roy commented: "An incident occurred in the prison cell of SBMCH. We cannot speculate without investigation. We will conduct a thorough inquiry and provide further details thereafter. The issue of potential negligence by officials is also being looked into."

Dr Saiful Islam, the hospital's superintendent, said: "There was a Naik and two constables responsible for overseeing the prison cell. Three individuals, including a mentally unstable patient, were housed in the cell."

On the morning of the incident, the mentally ill patient began assaulting the other two accused while they were sleeping. Motahar sustained fatal injuries to various parts of his body, including his head, resulting in his death. Ajit's injuries are reported to be less severe.

Sources revealed that at the time of the incident, a staff member had left to have breakfast, taking the key to the cell lock with them. Consequently, officials were delayed in entering the prison cell.

Hospital sources emphasized that mentally challenged patients should be housed in the hospital's mental ward as per regulations. However, the jurisdiction over the prison cell falls under the purview of the prison authorities.
