Rape at JU: Teachers, students to keep JU admin building blockaded indefinitely

  • Demand eviction of non-students from dorms
  • Highest punishment for rapists
Update : 11 Mar 2024, 01:14 PM

Following the rape of a woman last month on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus, a group of teachers and students have continued holding protests demanding justice and as part of their movement have announced that they will blockade the university's administrative building indefinitely from Monday.

Prof Parvin Jolly, an organiser of the “Nipiron Birodhi Moncha” (Anti-Repression Platform), made the announcement on Sunday.

They have continued the movement for a five-point demand, including the highest punishment for the rapists and their accomplices.

Prof Parvin Jolly said: "When we went to the vice-chancellor with a five-point demand before the admission tests, he sought time from us. He told us that after the admission tests are over, he will look into our demands.

“But after the tests, he left through the back door without informing us. We can no longer trust the vice-chancellor. In consultation with teachers and students, I am announcing an indefinite blockade program from Monday.”

The demands of these teachers and students include evicting non-students from dorms and abolishing “gono rooms” to ensure accommodation for regular students, issuing a notification and office order for the expulsion of the perpetrator Mahmudur Rahman Joni, addressing all unresolved complaints previously raised to the sexual harassment cell and bringing those accused of various crimes on campus to justice, investigating the crimes of the accomplice proctor and the provost of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall and removing them from administrative positions, and taking legal action against those involved in the campus drug syndicate by identifying and declaring them unwanted on campus.
