A local Awami League (AL) leader in Jhenaidah was chopped to death by unidentified assailants on Thursday night.
Confirming the report, Jhenaidah sadar police said a group of assailants, numbering eight to 10, launched an attack on Sanarullah, 50, secretary of Harishankar union, under Jhenaidah sadar upazila, unit of AL on his way to home, which is at Arjonarayanpur village under the same upazila, around 9:30pm.
On information, police rushed to spot and recovered his body around 10pm.
However, Kazi Zalal Uddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Jhenaidah sadar police station, could not confirm the details of the incident.
"Iit's still unclear what could be the motive of the killing. We are looking into the matter," he said.
Sanarullah's body is taken to sadar police station. The body will be shifted to Jhenaidah General Hospital for autopsy Friday morning.
When contacted, Azizur Rahman, secretary of Jhenaidah district AL unit, told the Dhaka Tribune that he is not in a position to make any statement on the matter.
However, he deeply condemned the gruesome killing.
