Detectives reveal how Rohingyas obtain fake passports for cash

  • Ansar members among 23 arrested
  • 17 fake passports, 13 NIDs seized
  • Gang charges Tk25,000 for NIDs, Tk1,20,000 for passports

The Detective Branch of police has arrested 23 individuals belonging to a gang involved in producing birth certificates, NIDs and passports for Rohingyas in exchange for different amounts of money.

Detectives arrested them in two raids on Friday and Sunday in the Agargaon, Mohammadpur and Jatrabari areas of Dhaka.

DB officials said the arrestees would charge Tk5,000 to Tk12,000 for a birth certificate and provide it within six hours. They take Tk25,000 to make NIDs within three days and Tk1,20,000 to make passports.

Law enforcement seized numerous items from the accused, including 17 passports, 13 NIDs, five computers, three printers, 24 mobile phones and hundreds of passport-related documents.

Among the arrested persons are Rohingyas, as well as Bangladeshi brokers and Ansar members.

On Friday, the police conducted a raid and arrested three Rohingyas and 10 Bangladeshis. After grilling them, 10 additional individuals were arrested on Monday in Cox's Bazar, Tangail and Dhaka. 

Upon their appearance in court, the judge gave the police five days to question them in custody.

The arrested Rohingyas are Umme Salima (Samira), Morijan and Rashidul; Rohingya brokers Ayub Ali and Mostakim; Bangladeshi brokers Raju Sheikh, Shaon Hossain Niloy, Feroz Hossain and Md Tushar Mia, and Ansar members Jamsedul Islam and Md Raihan.

The brokers who run computer shops in Agargaon, Mohammadpur and Uttara are Md Shahjahan Sheikh, Md Shariful Alam, Zobair Molla, Shimul Sheikh, Ahmed Hossain, Md Masud Alam, Md Abdul Alim, Md Masud Rana, Fazle Rabbi Shawon, Rajab Kumar Das Deepta, Al Amin and Md Sohag.

According to the DB, the gang would transport Rohingyas from Cox's Bazar, Bandarban and Khagrachari to Dhaka. Another group provided birth certificates and NID to the Rohingyas. Lastly, another group within the gang would facilitate the deposit of money in banks and take biometrics and photographs through Ansar members at different regional passport offices, including Dhaka.

Documents and delivery slips were found on the mobile phones of the arrested brokers. In the last three months, 143 passports for Rohingyas have been found. 
Detectives said the gang later admitted to issuing passports in different names and addresses to Rohingyas as well as criminals in the country, since 2019.

Birth certificates and NIDs are made using addresses in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Rangpur, Shariatpur, Gopalganj and Barisal.
