Police, in collaboration with the Dhaka University (DU) proctorial team, rescued two abducted individuals from the university’s Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall on Saturday.

The individuals rescued are Mohammad Abdul Jalil and Hefaz Uddin. They were abducted from their residence in the capital’s Hatirjheel area.

Dhaka University Proctor Maksudur Rahman said: “Three Chhatra League leaders of DU are allegedly involved in the abduction. Action will be taken according to the state's laws and the university's rules.”

The alleged abductors are Mohammad Abul Hasan Sayedee, former assistant office secretary of the DU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League; Montasir Hossain, assistant publicity secretary of the Mohsin Hall unit of Chhatra League and a fourth-year student of the Islamic Studies Department; and Al Shahriar Mahmud Tansen, assistant relief and disaster secretary of the Mohsin Hall unit of Chhatra League.

The victims reportedly had been tortured for three days in several halls of DU. They were later rescued from room no 544 of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall.

Shahbagh police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Alamin said police recovered an iron rod from the room. In addition, signs of torture were evident in various parts of the victims' bodies.

Shahbuddin, a relative of one of the accused, Muntasir Mahmud,  said that Jalil owed him Tk35 lakh.

Jalil had taken the money for business purposes and resorted to various tricks when Shahbuddin demanded repayment.

On Wednesday, Shahabuddin, accompanied by 10-12 individuals, including three to four DU students, abducted Jalil and Hefaz from their home in the Hazipara area of Hatirjheel due to the delay in returning the money.

Later, the accused were handed over to the Hatirjheel police station after a general diary was filed by the victim's father, Jalil.

Hatijheel police station Officer-in-Charge Shah Md Awlad Hossain said: “The case is being filed.”
