Youth who threatened Egypt embassy remanded

Update : 22 Aug 2013, 09:43 AM

A Dhaka court placed Shawkat Afsar alias Hiron, who allegedly issued a threat on August 20 to blow up the Egyptian embassy in Dhaka, into a four-day remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ismail Hossain passed the order after Detective Branch of police sought 10-day remand to grill Hiron.

Meanwhile, the court turned down the bail plea made by the defendant’s lawyer Md Forkan.

The 18-year-old youth was arrested at 12pm from “Focus” Coaching Centre, located at the capital’s Farmgate area on Wednesday.

The coaching centre is run by the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) students’ wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Hailing from Jalalabad in Cox’s Bazar, Shawkat passed HSC this year and had been taking lessons at the coaching centre as he prepared for university admissions.

The arrestee claimed himself a supporter of Mohammed Morsi, the recently ousted President of Egypt and a Muslim Brotherhood member.

Following the threat, the embassy closed its visa issuing centre for 11 days from Tuesday.

The embassy authorities on Tuesday received the hand-written letter containing a threat to blow up the embassy as in Libya.

The Muslim Brotherhood is a political front that backs Egypt’s ousted President Mohammed Morsi.
