BSF detains 23 Bangladeshi smugglers in Tripura

The Border Security Force (BSF) detained 23 Bangladeshi smugglers in India’s northeastern state of Tripura on Monday. 

Being tipped off, the BSF laid an ambush in the area of the Samarganj border outpost under the South Tripura District and held 23 smugglers. They seized 125 bags of sugar weighing 6,250kg and 17 mobile phones from them.

As per a BSF statement, of the 23 arrested, 22 are residents of Feni district, while one is from Chittagong.

The smugglers have been transferred to the Monu police station for further proceedings.

So far in 2024, a total of 211,124kg of sugar has been seized. Meanwhile, 14 vehicles were seized and 34 smugglers were arrested.

In a statement, the BSF said that sugar smuggling has increased in the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura in recent years.

In 2023, BSF seized a total of 549,950kg of sugar. They arrested 16 smugglers with 27 vehicles.

On December 11, BSF foiled a smuggling attempt in Assam's Brahmaputra River. Two motor boats and 12,397kg of sugar were seized back then.

Earlier, 6,464 kg of sugar and two boats were seized in a similar raid on the Brahmaputra River on December 8.

Two days earlier, on December 6,172 Battalion of BSF Meghalaya Frontier seized a vehicle loaded with sugar worth Rs3 lakh near the Lumshnong-Sonapur border area.
