Robbers, like a thriller, looted ornaments worth Tk5m from a jewellry at the city's Keraniganj area Tuesday night amid presence of hundreds of people.
Witnesses and police said a gang numbering 8-10 committed the robbery at "Tanjeen Jewllers", located in Keraniganj's Jinjira Kalachand Plaza mall, at 9pm when its shop owner were about to shut its door for the day.
Jasim Uddin, owner of the shop, told the Dhaka Tribune six people entered the shop and asked the owner at gunpoint not to shout while two others took position outside the shop with home-made bombs.
Jasim was slashed with knives when he refused to give away jewellries. He has been whisked off to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
In five to ten minutes, the robbers bagged as many jewlleries as they could and then hurled a bomb to clear their escape route, police said.
The frequent blasts of cocktail created panic among the common people in the mall who ran helter-skelter for shelter.
Mainuddin, officer-in-charge of Keraniganj model police station, said: "We don't believe it's a robbery, it might take place over previous enmity."
"However, we are observing the situation and soon will find out who were behind this."
No case was filed in this connection till filling of the report at 10:30pm.
