A train caught fire in the capital’s Cantonment area on Wednesday evening.

The Brahmaputra Express, which left Kamalapur railway station for Dewanganj in Jamalpur at 6:45pm, witnessed the minor fire incident which was extinguished immediately, Dhaka Railway Police SP Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident to the media.

He said the fire originated from a sack placed on the silencer pipe of the train engine, obstructing the smoke emission.

When the fire erupted within the sack, the railway police promptly intervened and stopped the train at Cantonment station to address the situation.

Later, the train left for the destination again, he added.

The police officer said: “We did not think it was sabotage. Initially, it is believed that the smoke coming out of the silencer pipe got caught in the sack and started the fire.”
