3 arrested over youth murder in Pirojpur

Three people have been arrested in a case filed in connection with the murder of Swechchhasebak Dal activist in Pirojpur.

The deceased, Lalon Fakir, 26, was working as an election activist of rebel Awami League MP aspirant Maulana AKMA Awal.

The arrestees are Babul Sheikh, 44, Zahid Hossain, 25, and Muhammad Sabuj, 26. 

Pirojpur Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ashikuzzaman said: “A case has been lodged by the police in this regard. The case lists five named and five unnamed individuals as accused.”

Police have been trying to arrest the other accused.

Upon receiving the news of his death, supporters of the independent candidate, who is also the district Awami League president, organized a procession in the district town on Monday night.

They also had announced a strike in the Pirojpur town on Tuesday, but it was not observed.

On Saturday evening, supporters of independent candidate Maulana AKMA Awal
allegedly vandalized an election office belonging to Awami League's candidate and Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim. Both are contesting for the same seat.

Following this incident, supporters of Awami League candidate SM Rezaul Karim allegedly attacked Lalon Fakir, leaving him critically injured. 

Locals rushed him to the district hospital before transferring him to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) for treatment. Later, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). 

He died while undergoing treatment at DMCH on Monday night.

According to information provided by residents and relatives, Lalon Fakir, who was once a notorious criminal in the town, became an election activist for rebel Awami League candidate Maulana AKMA Awal.

Police sources and local people claim that Lalon Fakir had been accused in several cases related to vandalizm, drug peddling, and arson during various events organized by BNP in 2014 and later.
