8 suspected militants placed on remand

The Jhalakathi Judicial Magistrate’s Court yesterday placed eight of nine suspected militants of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (Huji) on six-day remands while the other, a minor, was sent to jail.

The suspects were arrested on August 14 while attending a training session at Khademul Islam Qawmi Madrasa at Uttar Kamdevpur of Mollarhut union under Nalchhiti upazila in Jhalakathi. Police recovered a haul of jihadi books, four sharp weapons, one grenade, seven mobile phone sets from the arrestees.

Sub-Inspector Mahmudul Hasan lodged two cases with the Nalchhiti police station on Thursday in this connection.

One of the cases (no 12) was lodged under sections 19(e) of Arms Act, 1978 and section 4 of Explosive Act of 1908 and would be investigated by Sub-Inspector Abul Kalam.

Another case (no 13) was lodged under sections 1/2/3 on Anti-terrorism Act 2003(amended in 2013) and would be investigated by AZM Masuduzzaman, OC at Nalchhiti police station.

Investigation officers of cases yesterday appealed for five-day remand to interrogate the nine arrestees in each of the two cases before the judicial magistrate court of Jhalakathi.

Md Shahidul Islam, magistrate of the court, allowed three-day remands in each cases against eight of the nine accused who got arrested.

They were identified as: Mashiur Rahman Talukdar alias Miron, Moallem Qari Sirajul Islam, Nurul Islam,

Jubayer Haoladar, Abul Bashar Mridha, MA Azim, Md Sohag and Minhazul Abedin, said Nalchhiti police station officials.

Five of the arrested were from different areas in Jhalakathi, three were from Madaripur and another was from Gopalganj.
