ACC challenges conditional bail for Hall-Mark chairman

Update : 18 Aug 2013, 05:53 PM

The Anti-Corruption Commission has lodged 11 petitions with the High Court on Sunday, seeking cancellation of Hall-Mark Group’s Chairman Jasmine Islam’s bail in 11 money laundering cases.

A lower court, on August 4, granted bail to Jasmine on a condition that she would pay Tk1bn each month.

Official sources said through filing the cases the ACC challenged the legality of the conditional bail.

ACC Counsel Khurshid Alam Khan told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have questioned the bail from two basic grounds. Firstly, Supreme Court in its judgement declared conditional bail illegal. Moreover, it is under the jurisdiction of ‘Artha Rin Adalat’ to ensure repayment of loans, while the magistrate court has to try the offence of fraud.

“Secondly, as the investigation against Jasmine is going on, the bail is not appropriate.”

He will move to a High Court vacation bench today for annulling the conditional bail, said the lawyer.
