Two Awami League leaders threatened at gunpoint by Cox’s Bazar lawmaker’s relatives

Relatives of Cox’s Bazar-1 MP Zafar Alam have been accused of assaulting and threatening to kill two Awami League leaders with guns.

The two leaders who were attacked are former general secretary of Matamuhuri thana Awami League Mohsin Babul, 60, former chairman of Saharbil UP, and Organizing Secretary Iqbal Darbeshi, 40.

Mohsin Babul levelled the allegation at a press conference at Cox's Bazar Press Club on Wednesday. 

He complained that they were attacked by criminals at a lawyer's chamber on Tuesday. 

Former general secretary of Cox's Bazar Awami League Salahuddin Ahmed CIP attended the press conference seeking punishment for the attack.

These two leaders were attacked by criminals led by Ziabul Haque and Mizanur Rahman, two nephews of the Awami League lawmaker. 

When local people came forward, the attackers fled the area. 

They were also injured in the sudden attack.

Later, the injured were rescued by locals and admitted to Chakaria Government Hospital for treatment.

Several other Awami League including former general secretary of Chakaria Upazila Awami League Gias Uddin Chowdhury, former vice president Sarwar Alam, former convenor of municipal Awami League Professor AKM Gias Uddin, former vice president Moslem Uddin Manik, Awami League leader and former chairman of Cox's Bazar Municipality Nurul Abshar, attended the press conference. 

Mohsin Babul said they went to Advocate Shahidullah Chowdhury’s chamber around 1:30pm to discuss some old cases. As the lawyer was not present in his chamber, some armed men led by Ziabul, Mizanur Rahman and a Jubo league leader Shawkat Osman entered the room and started issuing threats at gunpoint, they added. 

The attackers also assaulted them, they claimed at the press conference. 

Mohsin Babul also said that they first beat up Iqbal Darbeshi. Injured in the attack, Iqbal fell to the ground. Mizanur threatened to shoot him with a gun when he came to rescue Iqbal.

At one point Mizan beat and physically abused him. 

Iqbal was seriously injured in his left eye, said Mohsin, adding that the criminals attacked them intending to kill them.

Dhaka Tribune could not reach MP Zafar Alam over the phone for comment.
