Update : 17 Aug 2013, 06:57 AM

A young man was allegedly lynched to death on suspicion that he was a mugger in the capital’s Mirpur area early Saturday morning.

Police also rescued two other suspected muggers severely injured from the mob beating.

The deceased was identified as Sohel, 28, who was declared dead after being taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital following the beating.

One of the two injured mugging suspects, who is still to be identified, is currently being treated at the same hospital in critical condition.

Yousuf, the other suspect, is now under the custody of the Mirpur police station.

Abu Zafar, sub-inspector of Mirpur police station, said the trio was caught by the locals when they were trying to flee after snatching a gold bangle and a chain from a woman around 3am from in front of her house in the Monipur area.

The woman, who had returned to Dhaka by a night coach from her Bogra village home following the Eid vacations, was about to enter her house when the muggers attacked her, police said.

“When the woman screamed for help, locals chased the muggers, caught them and started beating them up. Police later rescued them. After they were taken to the DMCH, doctors declared Sohel dead,” said SI Zafar.
