An Awami League activist was allegedly killed in a clash between two factions of the party in Barisal's Mehendiganj upazila on Monday afternoon.

The deceased was Arif Jamaddar, son of Abdul Jalil Jamaddar, a resident of Mehendiganj upazila's Chardaiyara village.

Mehendiganj police station Sub-Inspector Muhammad Arif confirmed the incident.

The rivalry between both factions intensified after they were both defeated in the local Union Parishad elections held three months ago.

"The feud over a recent union council election led to Arif's killing," said the deceased's brother, Jasim Jamaddar.

He also blamed rival Kasem Faraji, who is part of the Awami League faction supported by Mehendiganj Municipality Mayor Kamal Uddin, for his brother Arif's murder.

Arif's nephew, Biplob Jamaddar, said: “Kasem Faraji and several others from the rival Kamal Uddin group critically injured Arif with sharp weapons when he was closing his grocery shop for lunch.

“After the attack, the assailants detonated crude bombs before leaving the area, causing panic in the area. Later, when customers arrived at the shop, they found Arif injured and bleeding on the ground. They immediately informed the family members. He was rushed to Sher E Bangla Medical College in the afternoon,” Biplob added.

On Monday night, he died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
