A Dhaka Court wednesday recorded part of the cross-examination of a witness in the radar purchase corruption case against former military dictator Hussein Muhammad Ershad and four others.
Divisional Special Judge Mohammad Nurul Islam recorded the cross-examination and set September 19 for the rest of the cross-examination and the next prosecution witness.
Defence counsel Sheikh Sirajul Islam cross-examined the witness. Ershad was not present before the court.
The prosecution has so far produced 11 witnesses for cross-examination.
According to the case Ershad and the other accused had purchased radars from the United States in exchange for financial benefit.
The government lost Tk640.4m for their illegal purchase.
The other three accused in the case are: former Air Force chiefs Sultan Mahmud and Momtaj Uddin Ahmed and the director of United Traders AKM Musa.
Accused AKM Musa has been absconding from the beginning of the case.
The then Anti-Corruption officer and Assistant Superintendent of Anti-Corruption Bureau Md Ali Haider filed the case with the Cantonment Police Station on April 4, 1992.
After a long investigation, investigation officers Manjur Ahmed and Abdus Sattar Sarker submitted the charge sheet on 27 October 1994 accusing Ershad and the four others.
On August 12, 1995, charges were framed against the accused. But the trial had been stalled for a long time by a High Court order.
