An alleged top criminal who faced 18 cases related to robberies and extortion was killed in a “gunfight” between his gang and police Friday night in the capital’s Rupnagar of Mirpur area.
Mohammad Mahadi, 35, died on the spot during the gunfight around 10:30pm, said Imtiaz Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Mirpur Police Division.
“The gunfight started as the gang of seven criminals opened fires on a team of police patrolling in Mirpur embankment area,” he said.
He said at one stage Mahadi’s cohorts fled the scene and Mahadi was found lying dead. A US-made pistol was found on him.
“The criminals had been planning to commit crimes in the area. As the patrolling police team challenged them, they opened fires,” the DC said.
In reply to a question, he said Mahadi was accused in 18 cases filed with Mirpur police station alone and he was suspected in many other cases filed with other police stations.
Mahadi was the main suspect in the case related to the killing of garment factory owner Fazlur Rahman Babu.
