Savar Islami Bank robbery: Police arrest 3, recover 11L

One of the arrestees has an extensive criminal record, with nine cases registered against him

Police have arrested three persons in connection with the robbery of Tk25 lakh while depositing the money from the agent banking of Savar Islami Bank. 

In this incident, a total of Tk11 lakh was recovered and the private car used in the robbery was seized.

Dhaka District Police Superintendent Asaduzzaman gave this information through a press release on Sunday afternoon.

The arrestees are Md Shimul, 36, Md Tauhid Islam, 45, and Md Jasim Uddin, 45.

Jasim was arrested from Patuakhali on Saturday and Shimul and Tawhid were arrested from Narayanganj's Siddhirganj upazila.

Shimul, in particular, has an extensive criminal record, with nine cases registered against him in various police stations, including the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), involving charges such as human trafficking and drug trafficking. Similarly, Tawhid Islam and Jasim have one and three cases registered against them, respectively.

During a press conference, it was revealed that the incident occurred when Islami Bank's Marketing Manager, Md Habibur Rahman, and Security In-charge Naeem Islam were en route to the bank's Hemayetpur branch with Tk 25,60,000. A white private car intercepted their journey near Al-Maqdani restaurant, from which the robbers emerged, forcefully taking away the entire money. Subsequently, the official lodged a complaint at Savar Model police station on May 8.

Significantly, the investigation officer, SI Sudip Kumar Gop, successfully arrested Jasim Uddin on May 27 in Patuakhali, leveraging CCTV footage and information technology. 

Based on the information provided by Jasim, Shimul and Tawhid Islam were subsequently captured in Narayanganj's Siddhirganj area. Along with their arrest, Tk11 lakh from the stolen amount of Tk25 lakh was recovered, and the private vehicle utilized in the crime was confiscated. seized.

The police superintendent further disclosed that following the heist, the three suspects divided the stolen funds among themselves. 

Md Tawhid Islam utilized his share for his mother's medical treatment, while Jasim Uddin employed his portion in the construction of a house, Asaduzzaman added. 

These individuals are part of a notorious robbery gang and have multiple cases registered against them across various districts. Presently, they have been remanded for seven days by the court as investigations continue, he said.
