Two shot dead in Khagrachhari

Update : 14 Jul 2013, 03:17 PM

Two people were shot dead in separate incidents in Khagrachhari yesterday.

They were identified as Arun Kanti Chakma, a pastor, and Anjoy Chakma, a political activist.

The exact reasons behind the deaths couldn’t be confirmed yet.

Police said two unidentified men killed Arun, 40, pastor of the Tapitapara Christian church of the homonymous village, after asking him to come out of his residence earlier Sunday.

“They asked him out sometime after midnight and shot him at point-blank range. A total of six rounds were fired,” officer-in-charge of the local police station, Mohammad Alamgir, said.

“He might have been the victim of an internal strife within the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS),” he added.

The body was sent to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital for post-mortem analysis.

No case was lodged until the filing of this report. Meanwhile, a group of unknown criminals killed Anjoy Chakma, 35, at the Ultachhari village of Dighinala at around 8:00am.

Anjoy was a leader of the MN-Larma faction of PCJSS.

Officer-in-charge of Dighinala police station, Mohammad Shahdat Hossain Titu, said he was shot to death by people who are yet to be identified.

His body was taken to the Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital for post-mortem analysis.

The police couldn’t confirm the motive behind the murder. However, Anjoy’s party colleagues were quick to point their accusing fingers at their rival party.

PCJSS’s (MN-Larma group) Khagrachhari district unit General Secretary Bibu Ranjon Chakma said it was the Santu Larma-led fraction, their rivals, which perpetrated the murder.

The Assistant Secretary of PCJSS (Santu Larma faction) Sachib Chakma, however, denied the allegation, saying they are not responsible for the incident.
