Police arrested a 60-year-old man for raping a seven-year-old child at Kaunia upazila in Rangpur on Friday night.
The rape survivor has been admitted to the one-stop crisis centre of Rangpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
The accused was identified as Mofazzal Mandal.
According to the police, upon receiving information that a seven-year-old child was raped, they rushed to Dushmara, a remote char area near Teesta River in Kaunia upazila.
Police admitted the child to Kaunia Upazila Health Complex first. Later, when her condition deteriorated, she was admitted to the one-stop crisis centre of Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
The rape survivor's mother said she left her seven-year-old daughter at home last Friday and went to pick potatoes.
At 3pm, the child went to the char area when she could not find her mother. At that time, Mofazzal Mandal, grabbed and took her to the side of a pepper field and raped her.
Later, a woman came forward, witnessing the incident, and Mofazzal Mandal fled, leaving the child in critical condition.
Kaunia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Montacher Billah said the rape survivor's mother filed a case under Women and Child Abuse Act at Kaunia police station on Friday night.
Kaunia police raided and arrested Mofazzal Mandal later that night. The court ordered the accused to be sent to jail on Saturday afternoon.
