BCL infighting hurts 40 in Sylhet

Update : 02 Jul 2013, 12:51 PM

At least 40 people were injured during a clash between two factional groups of the ruling party’s student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League, in Sylhet yesterday.

Beanibazar Government College authority organised a fresher’s orientation programme for HSC and Degree (pass) graduates where Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid was present as the chief guest.

In the presence of the minister, two rival groups – one led by Jamal and the other by Pavel – engaged in a scuffle during the programme.

Later, while addressing the programme, the minister condemned the incident and warned that stern action will be taken against the miscreants.

Following the programme, Chhatra League, Chhatra Dal, Talamiz-e-Islamia and Chhatra Jomiat brought out processions at the college campus welcoming the fresher.

At one stage, supporters of Jamal and Pavel again locked into clashes in which both parties allegedly used lethal weapons leaving six critically injured.

Police charged batons and fired teargas shells to bring the situation under control, and arrested seven Chhatra League activists from the scene.

Police sources said additional forces were deployed in the area to avert any further untoward incidents.
