Five people, including the grandchildren of a Chawkbazar mosque president Mansur Ahmed, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder of Mansur.
They were arrested from Chawkbazar, Munshiganj and Chandpur after a two-day operation on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Biplob Bijoy Talukdar, joint commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), gave this information in a press conference at DMP's media centre on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrested persons are Md Shahadat Mubin Alvi, grandson of the deceased and granddaughter Anika Tabassum, and Raju, Raihan and Saeed.
The joint commissioner said: “A person was killed in his home at Khaje Dewan Lane in Chawkbazar in the early hours of November 17. In this incident, a case of robbery with murder was filed at Chawkbazar police station.”
Upon investigating the house, a syringe was found which justified the incident to be murder, he said.
“CCTV footage of several places around the house was collected and reviewed. After the review, Anika, a medical student, and Alvi, an intermediate student, were identified and arrested from Chawkbazar. Based on the information given by them, their friends Raju, Raihan and Saeed, who were directly involved in the murder, were arrested from Munshiganj and Chandpur,” he added.
“The two planned the robbery after the family refused to give them money to travel. The group planned to steal the money while most of the family were away at a wedding on November 17. Later, they fled with cash and gold ornaments,” Biplob added.
