More than 42 people, including seven women, were injured in a clash over a mosque’s waqf land at Awazpur village under Char Fasson upazila of Bhola Friday noon.
According to witnesses, the villagers of Awazpur were divided into two factions – Rari and Bandukshi. The clash started after the Rari group protested the encroachment and grabbing of a local mosque’s waqf land by the Bandukshi group.
The clash with lethal weapons started after the Juma prayers at around 1:45pm and continued until 3pm. The confrontation was later controlled by local socio-political elites.
Among the injured, Nishi Begum, Saleha Begum, Khadiza Begum, Khaleda Begum, Rahima Begum, Jahanara Begum, Nasima Begum, Jasim Rari, Mainuddin, Belal, Abul Kalam, Alamgir Hossain, Mojibul Huq, Amzad Hossain, Amzad Hossain, Shahid, Kamal, Siraj, Wahid, Jasim Bandukshi, Riaz and Saddam were admitted at Char Fasson Upazila Health Complex and the others were released after primary treatment.
Amid them, critically injured Nishi Begum and Jasim Rari were sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Sub Inspector Md Murad of Char Shashivushan police station said no case has been lodged in this connection yet as the local elites are trying to negotiate the differences between the groups.
