Members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) yesterday arrested four Rohingyas at the Shahjalal International Airport, trying to leave the country using fake passports.
The Rohingyas identified as Jomir, 18, Abu Bakkar Siddique, 38, Taraf, 35, and Saa’d Ali, 20, all from the Maung Daw district of Myanmar were arrested at about 8am.
The APBn’s senior assistant superintendent Alamgir Hossain said: “The Rohingyas were about to board a Kuwait Airways flight to Saudi Arabia.”
“Acting on a tip-off, an APBn squad arrested them in possession of fake passports and other documents,” he added. During an initial interrogation, they confessed to using forged documents arranged by a broker named Anwar Hossain in exchange for a substantial sum of money.
Alamgir said that the police later had the arrestees call Anwar and make him come to the airport, where he was immediately arrested.
A case has been filed with the Airport Police Station in connection to the incident.
The Rohingyas are a Muslim minority, native to western Myanmar, from where they fled in large numbers to escape persecution.
