Unknown criminals, on Sunday, shot a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) ward leader at East Kazipara in the capital’s Kafrul area.
The dead, Fazlul Haque alias Babu, 23, was the president of BCL’s ward 94 unit.
In protest of the murder, BCL activists halted traffic movement on the roads at Shewrapara around 1pm.
Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Kafrul police station, when asked about the stance of the activists, informed that the BCL men were demonstrating in the area.
About the incident he said, Babu was in conversation with someone in front of a mosque at Itkhola intersection in East Shewrapara around 11am when suddenly two youths on a motorbike arrived and fired two rounds of bullets. They fled the scene as locals came forward.
Babu, who was shot in his abdomen, was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 11:45am.
However, a witness selling tea near the spot, on request of anonymity, told reporters that Babu was inside a nearby rickshaw garage with his friends. Two youths – one wearing helmet and the other with his face covered came and dragged him out of the garage.
After taking him in front of the mosque, they shot him twice from a close range, the witness added.
Regarding the murder, Babu’s father Hedayet Ullah Patwari said:“The local goon Titu killed his sonover an old feud concerning a piece of land.”
“His maternal uncle’s son-in-law bought the land from Titu’s parents a few years back. When the new owner offered the land to a developer company, the local goon Titu demanded extortion moneyfrom them,” he added.
Babu’s father claimed that his son was murdered since he protested the issue as a relative of the new land owner.
OC Wazed Ali said that the body has been sent to the DMCH morgue for autopsy.
“We are looking into the incident and a case will soon be filed in this connection,” he added.
