Sylhet triple murder: Husband under suspicion of killing wife, children

Police, after speaking with him at the hospital, found the husband’s story inconsistent

Update : 17 Jun 2021, 06:54 PM

Police suspect the husband to be behind the murder of a woman named Alema and her two children in Goainghat upazila of Sylhet district.

Alema’s husband Hifzur Rahman was found injured after the incident and kept under police custody at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Locals found the bodies of Alema, and her two children—Mizan 8, and Anisa, 3—in a pool of blood at a house in Binnakandi South Para area of the upazila on Wednesday.

Gowainghat-Companiganj Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Probash Kumar Singh confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday.

He said: “We haven’t formally questioned Hifzur over the incident as of yet. But, policemen on duty at the hospital found his story inconsistent after speaking with him informally.

“Since he is the only surviving member of the incident, we are primarily suspecting that Hifzur was involved in the gruesome murders.”

Alema’s father filed a case against unnamed people with the Gowainghat police station early Thursday.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Farid Uddin told the reporters on Thursday that police currently had two leads in the case.

"The first makes Hifzur a suspect as he got into arguments with his wife regularly. The second makes his uncle a suspect because of Hifzur's longstanding dispute with him over a piece of land," he added.

A neighbour, Islam, said that the couple recently had an intense argument over attending a wedding invitation. Moreover, in the last month, he had arbitrated their family dispute twice.
