His second wife among six charged

Update : 09 Jun 2021, 08:40 PM

A case has been filed against six people seeking the rescue of two children of former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter.

His father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain filed the case on May 19 at the court of Dhaka’s Executive Magistrate Md Abdul Awal.

Babul’s second wife Ismat Jahan, his sister Laboni Akter, Abdul Wadud Miah, Labu alias Habibur Rahman, Iktiar Miah and Sabu Miah have been named in the case.

Taking the case into cognizance, the court issued a search warrant asking the officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohammadpur police station to find out the two children.

On May 25, the police station’s Sub-Inspector Jahir Rayhan, the investigation officer of the case, submitted a report to the court mentioning that the police had not found the two children at their address in Mohammadpur.

Confirming the development, Babul’s lawyer Md Sanaul Islam Tipu said that the court on Tuesday again issued a search warrant asking Magura Sadar police station to find out the two children and submit a report by June 15. Babul’s family residence is in Magura.

According to the case dockets, Babul was arrested on May 12 in connection with the murder of his wife Mahmuda Aktar Mitu. At the time of his arrest, the couple’s two children --Aktar Mahmud Mahir (12) and Tabassum Taznin Tapur (9)—were in the custody of the six accused.

The complainant also mentioned in the case that despite repeated attempts, he did not fund his grandchildren at the present address of the six people.

Mentioning that he was worried about the future of his grandchildren, Mosharraf sought a court order to rescue them and allow him to get custody of them.

On the morning of June 5, 2016, SP Babul’s wife Mitu was hacked and shot dead near the GEC Intersection in Chittagong while she was on her way to drop her son to school.

On May 11, former SP Babul Akter was interrogated at the Mansurabad office of the Police Bureau of Investigation in Chittagong.

He was later shown arrested in a case filed against him and seven others with Panchlaish police station.
