In a harrowing incident, a 10-year-old schoolgirl has been assassinated after rape allegedly by her neighbor in Rangpur’s Mithapukur upazila.
Following the murder, the rapist buried the body in the living room of his grandmother Halima Khatun, police said after arresting her on Thursday noon.
Accused Raja Mia, 20, son of Shahin Mia, went into hiding on late Wednesday night.

The victim, daughter of Rabiul Islam, a resident of Santospur village in Balua Masimpur union, had been missing since Wednesday noon. Her family, relatives and neighbors searched for her but to no avail.
They finally resorted to a loudspeaker campaign at night.
Meanwhile, some locals found the activities of Raja Mia suspicious during the search. Sensing the matter, he fled the village.

Later, the locals cordoned off Raja Mia’s house and informed the police on Thursday morning, leading to the recovery of the victim’s body.
Police instantly said that the victim had her throat slit.
“She might have been strangled before being slaughtered after rape,” said Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kamruzzaman.

A murder case was filed over the incident and the body was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Separate teams of the Police Bureau of Investigation and the Criminal Investigation Department visited the crime scene.
