The two women in Savar were raped with the intention of forcibly extorting money from the building-owner Kabir Hossain, the prime accused Liton Ali Mondol said in his confessional statement to the police.
After raping two women at gunpoint inside Legend College in Savar on July 6, Liton – a DB informer – and his associates fled the scene. However, Liton was soon caught and arrested from his in-law’s house in Charkhalsi village of Daulotpur in Manikganj on Tuesday.
According to a Savar police source, police had been tracking the mobile phone activities of Liton for three days since the incident occurred in Savar. Before he hid in his in-law’s place in Charkhalsi, Liton had been staying in different places in Baghutia union in Daulotpur.
Finally detectives, led by the investigating officer in the case, Inspector Shahid Suhrawardy from Savar Model Police Station, arrested Liton from his father-in-law Tajim Uddin’s house.
The Savar Model Police Station OC Mohsinul Kadir said Liton was produced before a court on Wednesday.
In a confessional statement to the police on Wednesday morning, Liton admitted to committing the crime.
While talking to the Bangla Tribune, Liton admitted that he had lured the two women to his building with the purpose of getting the building-owner, Kabir Hossain, into trouble. However, his plans were foiled after locals arrived at the scene hearing the victims screaming.
However, Savar police officials have refused to give solid statements regarding the matter of Liton’s involvement with the police as a source. According to Inspector Suhrawardy, Liton admitted to his crimes and the involvement of others. But as the investigation is ongoing, the IO refused to say anything further.
On the other hand, a relative of Kabir, the building-owner, told the Dhaka Tribune that Liton used to stay at a room on the sixth floor of the Legend College building. A number of police constables including the Special Branch (Savar) Constable Rezaul (Batch No 2663) used to visit him. They used to engage in different illicit activities including consuming yaba.
Kabir grew furious when he learned of Liton and his associates’ activities. He demanded Liton move out. In response, Liton was outraged and plotted to rape the two girls in order to muddy the situation and obtain a large sum of money by threatening Kabir.
During the primary interrogation, Liton confessed that he called the girls on advice from SB Constable Rezaul and DB Constable Munshi. The girls were then locked in a room on the second floor and raped the entire night on July 6.
But they had to abandon their plans after the locals gathered around the building upon hearing the night long screams of the victims.
Savar OC Mohsinul said that Liton has admitted to his crimes and the police have asked for seven days of remand for him.
