A 14-year-old schoolgirl died from excessive bleeding from her genitals within about a month after her marriage in Tangail as the husband reportedly continued coitus, disregarding the girl's need for immediate medical attention.

The girl succumbed to her injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday, said the girl's grandfather Lal Khan, quoting doctors.

The victim was identified as Nurnahar, an eight grader at Kalia Vidyalaya [school] of Kalia village in Tangail's Basail upazila.

The girl was married to Rajib Khan, 34, son of Abdur Rashid from Fulki Paschimpara village in Basail 34 days before she died. The girl's poverty stricken family was tempted to marry off their daughter to Rajib as he worked in the United Arab Emirates, according to locals and the victim's family.

As the girl was underaged, the marriage was not officially registered.

"My grand-daughter informed us that she had been receiving treatment from a village doctor [Kabiraj], since she told her in-laws that she has been bleeding from the first night of her marriage," said Lal Khan, claiming that Rajib continued coitus disregarding his grand-daughter's condition.

As her condition deteriorated, she was first taken to a clinic in Tangail and was then shifted to Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur. She was later transferred to the DMCH where she passed away early on Sunday.

After an autopsy that day, she was buried at a local burial spot near her grandfather's house.

The girl's family filed a written complaint at Basail police station against the girl's in-laws in connection with the matter, said the police station's  Officer-in-Charge Harunur Rashid. "Further steps will be taken after the autopsy report arrives."

Basail Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Firozur Rahman said bleeding is a possibility during sexual encounters at an early age. If such a condition occurs, immediate medical attention is needed.
